Menominee Gains Five Cannabis Dispensaries in One Month Amid Border Competition

Menominee, Michigan, transformed from a cannabis desert to a hub with five recreational dispensaries by early August, all launching since late July. This rapid expansion exploits the city's position across the border from Wisconsin, where marijuana remains illegal for recreational use. The influx highlights Michigan's maturing cannabis market and draws customers from neighboring states seeking legal access.

Strategic Location Fuels Dispensary Boom

Michigan legalized recreational cannabis in 2018 through voter-approved Proposition 1, creating a framework for licensed retailers to operate. Menominee's proximity to Wisconsin positions it as a prime spot for "border shopping," similar to patterns seen near other state lines like Illinois and Indiana. Dispensaries such as The Fire Station, RIZE, Lume, Higher Love, and Nirvana opened curbside or drive-thru operations to bypass delays in full storefront construction.

The Fire Station led the charge in late July. "Menominee was one of the areas that we identified as a great location for us," said Stosh Wasik, CEO and co-founder. "You know, it resonates with our brand, it’s relatable. We are born and raised, we’re Yoopers." This local branding appeals to Upper Peninsula residents, fostering quick community ties.

Curbside Model Speeds Market Entry

Regulatory hurdles often slow brick-and-mortar openings, but Michigan allows temporary curbside service for licensed operators. This approach let the five dispensaries start sales months ahead of schedule. "Our building up front isn’t going to be open until spring of 2024," Wasik noted. "So, it’s a great opportunity for people to get used to us and get used to our brand and get used to the way that things work, and also provide safe and reliable accessibility to cannabis to people in the community. We were able to do it six to nine months sooner than we had traditionally planned."

Proximity does not deter business. The Fire Station and Lume operate just 300 feet apart yet serve a broad regional draw. Lume's manager, Steven Schilly, reports steady demand: "We stay pretty busy all day. It’s really nice. It gets a lot of the community out here. We try and be involved as much as we can, and we just try to make sure we’re getting everybody what they need." The site accommodates 40 parking spaces with room for 25 more in line, easing access for Upper Peninsula customers.

Community Enthusiasm Meets Legal Clouds

Local response has been warm. Lindsay Martwick, director of retail operations for Higher Love, observed foot traffic and positivity: "We have had people walking up to our building because, obviously, we’re in this little plaza here, so we see a lot of traffic and a lot of people. Everyone has been so positive and so responsive to us being here!" Schilly echoed the convenience factor: "People are really excited to have a spot that’s going to offer more locations, which just makes it more convenient for everyone. It just allows closer access for different people in the Upper Peninsula."

Ongoing lawsuits cloud the outlook for Higher Love, Lume, and Nirvana, introducing uncertainty to their operations. These legal challenges stem from broader disputes in Michigan's licensing process, yet all five sites remain open for now. The cluster signals intensified competition in underserved areas, potentially stabilizing supply while testing regulatory resilience in a market projected to grow with interstate demand.
